PUMPTEC |

| In the last issue of Franklin Aid
we spoke on only breaking one wire with a control switch. Since then
we have received calls that felt not enough emphasis was placed on
the shock hazard potential involved with only breaking one wire. Franklin's
primary concern with all information, is the safety of the men and
women of our industry. Please be careful. |

| "New
and Improved" PUMPTEC: As part of our efforts to
continually improve submersible motor products, Franklin Electric
has made several enhancements to the PUMPTEC Pump Protection
System.
Diagnostic Indicator
Lights: The most noticeable change is the addition
of two lights: a green "POWER ON" light and a red "TRIPPED"
light. The "POWER ON" light illuminates whenever power is
applied to the PUMPTEC. Since PUMPTEC installs after the pressure
switch or control switch, this normally means the pump/motor
is running. If PUMPTEC detects an underload condition such
as occurs with a dry well or broken shaft, it disconnects
power to the motor and illuminates the "TRIPPED" light. Once
the adjustable recovery or delay time elapses, PUMPTEC reapplies
power to the motor and turns off the "TRIPPED" light. Auto-reset
recovery time is still adjustable from 2 to 90 minutes or
PUMPTEC can be set for manual reset only.
Signal or Alarm Contact:
Closely related to the new "TRIPPED" light is a new signal
circuit which can be used to turn on an external indicator.
This is done through a terminal labeled "SIG" or "SIGNAL".
A signaling device (1 amp maximum) such as a light, relay
or bell can be connected between this new terminal and the
voltage terminal in use (115 or 230). Note: The signal device
must be rated for the same voltage as the incoming power supply
used for the PUMPTEC unit. If the PUMPTEC trips, the signal
circuit closes and turns on your external device. In this
way the signal contact and the "TRIPPED" light operate together.
Once the recovery or delay time passes, the PUMPTEC resets
and turns off your signaling device. One important thing to
note is the signal circuit is energized for a few milliseconds
every time the pump runs. This could cause a bell or buzzer
to emit a slight noise or cause a light to flicker when the
pump starts

| Higher-rated Contactor:
The contactor used to break power to the motor when PUMPTEC trips
has changed from an open-frame type to an enclosed type. Although
it looks smaller than the old open-frame contactor, the new contactor
is actually higher rated. This same contactor has been successfully
used in Franklin Electric's QD PUMPTEC for over two years.
Improved Rotary Switch:
A minor change has been made in the rotary switch used
to set the amount of time that PUMPTEC remains in the "tripped"
condition before resetting (recovery time). This switch now has
an arrow, giving the installer a more definite indication of where
the switch is set. Just as a reminder, PUMPTEC is still factory-set
for a 30 minute recovery time.
It is important to note the PUMPTEC works the same
as it always did. The new model number is 580 002 0116. This is
a change in the last two digits of the previous number from "00"
to "16". For brochures or more information, please contact your

| Technical Corner:
Why doesn't my Pumptec
seem to restart after the recovery time has passed?
This is a common question we receive on Franklin's
Service Hotline. One of the main reasons that prompts this phone
call is the Pumptec has already timed-out, tried to restart the
motor, found insufficient water, and retripped. You also need to
check to see if the timer adjustment switch is set in the manual
restart or "0" position. This position requires that power to the
Pumptec be turned off for 5 seconds before the Pumptec will reset.
Another possible cause for the Pumptec not to reset is that the
timer adjustment switch is located between indents or notches. This
rotary switch is not an infinitely adjustable device. It has specific
notches or locations that have to engage.
So, whenever you receive a call "My Pumptec won't
reset.", make sure the recovery time adjustment knob is not between
marks or notches, the switch setting is not in the manual restart
position, and there is water in the well.
